What’s the better pick, 1440p or 4k with an RTX 4070 for new games?

I’m trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, but I’m worried my RTX 4070 won’t handle the higher resolution well in newer games. I see benchmarks showing great 1440p performance, but I’m not sure if pushing for that extra pixel density is worth the potential hit to my frame rates.

I got the RTX 4070 and stuck with 1440p at 165 Hz. It feels like the honest sweet spot for today’s games, most titles run smooth and DLSS helps when a game is pushing limits. 4K looked nicer on stills, but the extra pixels shaved too much from my frame rate in a lot of newer stuff.

Right now I’m on 4K on a larger screen and the GPU still chugs in the newest titles unless I drop some settings. The pixels are gorgeous, but I miss the predictability of higher frame counts.

I keep wondering if the problem here is really the resolution at all. Maybe it’s CPU, or VRAM, or just poor optimization in a couple of titles I care about. It wakes me up to question what I’m chasing.

I used to care about every extra pixel, but at 27 inches your eye isn’t always pulling that extra density in fast games. I found 1440p with a strong GPU gave me better consistency for the same desk distance.

Action I actually took: I enabled DLSS and tested a couple of games at 1440p and 4K with the same settings. 1440p stayed in the 90s to 120s in most cases; 4K hovered around 60 to 80, depending on the title.

One more thought that drifts a bit: maybe you could borrow a friend's monitor for a weekend and compare in the same room. It’s surprising how your perception shifts when you swap screens.
