What’s the experience like with laser retinopexy for a retinal tear?
#1
I've been told I have a small retinal tear during a routine checkup, and my doctor mentioned the possibility of laser retinopexy to seal it. The idea of a laser being used on my retina makes me nervous, and I'm wondering what the actual experience of the procedure is like for others.

I had laser retinopexy last year. They numb the eye with drops, you lie very still, and you watch the screen as the laser makes tiny burns around the tear. It’s fast—just a few minutes. It feels like a quick pinch or a warm ping for a moment, and there’s a brief burning smell when it fires. Afterward my vision was a bit hazy for the rest of the day, and I wore sunglasses outside because the light sensitivity lingered.

I can tell you how it felt from the chair. I was wide awake, no general anesthesia, just eye drops. The laser shots are quick, and you mainly notice a bright flash and a rush of heat for a split second. It’s not painful, more like a sharp snap followed by relief once it’s over. The staff kept talking in calm voices and it was over before you know it.

I asked if the tear would seal on its own and what the real risk was. The doctor recommended the laser path to prevent detachment, but I did push for a short monitoring window first. Did your doctor talk about what signs would mean you should call them afterward?

I remember the moment it ended and thinking, is that really it? The minutes stretch, then you’re done. My head felt a little light and there was some mild irritation for a day or two. Not dramatic, but not nothing either. I left with instructions to avoid rubbing the eye and to report new flashes or worsening vision.
