What’s the real performance difference between 1440p and 4k for gaming?

I’m trying to decide between a 1440p and a 4K monitor for my new setup, and I’m stuck on whether the higher resolution is actually worth the performance hit in the games I play. My GPU can handle both, but I’m noticing significantly lower frame rates at the ultra HD setting, and I’m not sure the visual clarity jump is as dramatic as some claim.

I swapped to a 4K panel and the image is noticeably crisper especially UI and text. The FPS drop at ultra settings is real but my GPU can handle both I just tune a couple options when I want smoother motion. For many the higher clarity is worth it for others not so much.

I tried the higher resolution with the same card and the difference is real but not universal. Some titles look noticeably sharper others not so much once you are used to it. The frame rate hit depends on the scene so I kept the older resolution for games that demand speed and only tuned a few options if needed.

Could the real issue be something else like how close you sit or the panel pixel density rather than the resolution itself? Maybe you notice the sharpness but the motion and response feel the same when you care about the big picture.

I once tried a high resolution monitor in the living room for casual use and found the color seemed deeper but the input lag with certain GPUs made me hesitate. When I switched back to the desk I realized the problem was not readability alone but the balance of performance heat and noise.
