What’s up with real-time tram arrivals at my stop fluctuating?
#1
I’ve been trying to plan my commute using the new real-time passenger information displays at my local tram stop, but the predicted arrival times keep jumping around wildly. It makes it really hard to know whether to wait or start walking, and I’m not sure if the data is unreliable or if it’s just reflecting actual traffic conditions.

Yep, same at my stop. The real-time display flips from 5 min to 1 min and back within a minute, so you end up guessing whether to wait or walk.

I kept a tiny notebook for two weeks, jotting down what it showed and when the tram actually rolled in. The numbers bounce all over—sometimes the forecast is late by a couple minutes, other times you get a surprise earlier arrival.

I’m not sure if the problem is bad data or just traffic and dwell times changing. Could be both, and I hate not knowing which to trust.

One morning I tried timing it and walked after the display stuck around 6 minutes for three cycles. The tram ended up arriving a bit later anyway, so I wasted a walk and learned not to trust the number too literally.
