What about the finale's ending made the character arc feel off to me?

I just watched the new season finale and I’m genuinely confused about the protagonist’s final choice to walk away from the council. It seemed to completely contradict their established motivations from the last few episodes, and I’m wondering if I missed a crucial piece of character development somewhere. Did anyone else find that character arc a bit jarring, or was it just me?

Yeah I felt that too. The finale makes them walk away from the council and it felt like the motivation flip happened off screen. Up until the last episodes they talked about change from within, protecting people, not abandoning the work. Now it looks like a reset, which is jarring.

I went back and watched the scene where they argued for reform and then the walkaway. The lines about duty and trust in the system were there, but the payoff never lands. I did a quick note: the explicit reasons didn't track with the emotional beat.

Maybe the problem isn’t the arc but the pacing. The show telegraphs a big choice but then punts the payoff with a fade or a new threat. Is the real problem the pacing, or is there some hidden context I'm missing?

I even thought about how a similar turn would play in another show, where the character tests the limits of authority and then sides with an external ally. It might just be a deliberate ambiguity but it leaves you with a shrug.
