What albums have the best instrument separation for open-back headphones?
#1
I just got a new pair of open-back headphones and I'm realizing my usual playlists sound a bit thin and lifeless through them. What albums have that rich, layered production where you can really hear the separation between instruments, something that would make these things sing?

Alex: Open-backs like these really bring out the room around the music. Aja by Steely Dan is a go to for me. The horns sit behind the beat and the piano and guitar carve their own spaces, so the whole band doesn’t mush together. It sounds surgical in spots, and that separation makes the listening feel tactile rather than loud.

Mira: Dark Side of the Moon has that airy, spacious mix that open-backs can really reward. On clean pressings or remasters, the clocks, the voices, the cash register—everything feels like it lives in its own layer. Some tracks breathe; others stay tight. I keep coming back when I want instrument separation to feel like it’s in the room.

Lee: I tried OK Computer and In Rainbows. Some tracks let the guitars ring and the synths weave through everything, which sounds great on these phones. Other tracks felt a little flat, like the space collapsed. It’s hit or miss depending on the mastering and the track.

Jordan: Are you sure the problem is the playlists and not the headphones? Sometimes open back just makes you notice tonal quirks or hiss you didn’t hear on closed cans.
