What are my rights if my landlord enters with only 24 hours notice?

I’m trying to understand if my landlord can legally enter my apartment for a “general inspection” with only 24 hours notice, since my lease only mentions entry for repairs or emergencies. It feels invasive, and I’m not sure where my right to quiet enjoyment ends and their right to access begins.

Legally it usually comes down to notice, purpose, and your local rules. Landlords generally have to give reasonable notice before entering for non emergency stuff like repairs or inspections, and many places use 24 to 48 hours as the standard window. The lease can say more, but if yours only mentions repairs or emergencies, a general inspection might still be treated as a non emergency entry request. Keep in mind the quiet enjoyment principle is meant to protect your privacy, so a sudden or very intrusive check could feel like a problem even if a notice is technically valid.

Last year my landlord did a general inspection with 24 hours notice. I asked for a reminder text and to have my roommate present, and they did come within that window. It still felt invasive, but at least I knew when it would happen.

Do you know the city or state you’re in? The rules about notice and permitted entry vary a lot.

When I tried to push back, it turned into a mismatch in expectations. Sometimes the problem was the timing, other times it was just the idea of someone going through closets and the thermostat. I think I preferred a longer lead time and a fixed window, but I never got both.
