What are some gripping audio dramas with a single narrator as the main event?

I've been trying to get into audio dramas, but I keep bouncing off the ones with huge casts and complex soundscapes. I just want a single, compelling narrator telling a great story. Are there any gripping shows like that, where the host's voice is the main event?

If you want a single, gripping voice steering the whole thing, start with The Memory Palace. It’s basically one person telling personal stories with minimal sound design, very intimate and cinematic in a quiet way.

Lore is another strong choice. Aaron Mahnke hosts and narrates the legends and historical bits with a steady, hypnotic cadence. It scratches that narration-first itch even when there’s some SFX.

LeVar Burton Reads fits your bill too, though it’s more fiction reading than a drama show. He reads stories with warmth and tension, and the writing sometimes carries the whole mood.

I get that the cast overload can kill momentum. I tried a few where I expected a big cast and bounced, then I gave a 15–20 minute opener from a single voice a shot. It helped move me, even if I don’t always finish every episode.
