What are the chances amoxicillin is causing a rash in my toddler?

My 18-month-old has been on amoxicillin for an ear infection for four days, and now she has a fine, pinkish rash all over her torso. The pediatrician’s office said it might be a viral rash, but I’m worried it’s a reaction to the medicine since it started after the first dose.

That sounds scary. A rash after starting amoxicillin could be a drug reaction or a viral rash that just showed up at the same time. Don’t stop the antibiotic on your own unless a clinician tells you to; call the pediatrician today and ask what to do, especially if it’s spreading, very itchy, or if you notice swelling or trouble breathing.

I’ve been there with my kid. The doctor said it was viral, but I kept watching for hives or swelling and asked for tips on what to watch. In the end the rash faded after a couple days, but it was stressful.

If you’re seeing pinkish, fine rash all over the torso, try to keep the skin cool and avoid piling on lotions or new soaps. Note when it started, any fever, irritability, or appetite changes, and bring that timeline to the next visit.

Could the problem be something else entirely besides the rash?

If there’s any trouble breathing, swelling of the face or lips, or the rash spreads rapidly or is accompanied by a high fever, go to urgent care.
