What are the signs my sinus infection is bacterial vs viral?
#1
I’m trying to understand the difference between a bacterial sinus infection and a viral one after my recent experience. My doctor mentioned the color or duration of symptoms isn’t a reliable indicator on its own, which surprised me. I had what seemed like a clear viral cold that just dragged on, but then developed intense facial pain and thick green discharge that lasted over two weeks. I’m curious how others have navigated figuring out when it might actually be bacterial, especially without immediately jumping to antibiotics.

I had a cold that lingered and then real facial pressure started. I did not rush to meds I tried rest fluids a saline nose rinse a humidifier and over the counter pain meds. It hung on for about two weeks before I felt a bit better and I did not see antibiotics right away. The doctor said that color of mucus by itself means little and we watched the pattern of pain day by day.

Last year I went to urgent care after a week with thick green discharge and no clear turn toward recovery. They kept it open as a possibility that it could be from a bacterial infection but did not insist on antibiotics right away. I tried nasal steroids salt spray and steam and waited a few days. The pain stayed stubborn for longer but then started easing and I avoided antibiotics in the first run I tried.

It may be not a clean sinus issue at all but something like allergies or even a toothache that convinced me the face was sore. I worried about a dental origin once and that made me slow down to check all the angles. I kept notes on how the pain moved and if washing out my nose helped or not. It felt silly at times but it did keep me grounded when the guidance kept changing.

I tried a simple log to see what was making me feel better or worse. I tracked days with fever neck tenderness and sleep quality and I measured if a nap helped more than a dose of medicine. After ten days of stubborn symptoms the doctor suggested imaging to be sure and that helped me decide the next step but it was not a magic fix and I still wonder if I misread what I was feeling.
