What binder should I use to get smooth mica shimmer on greeting cards?
#1
I’m trying to add a subtle shimmer to a set of handmade greeting cards using mica powder, but my first attempt just looked dusty and uneven. I mixed it with water and painted it on, but maybe I need a different binder or a way to apply it more smoothly.

I started with mica powder mixed into water, but on plain card stock it looked dusty and uneven. A friend suggested using a binder that dries clear, so I tried thinning a small amount of clear acrylic gloss medium with a touch of water and folding it into the powder. Dabbed it on with a soft sponge instead of brushing, and it smoothed out a lot more.

I tried gum arabic like watercolor medium, but the shimmer wandered and the surface felt grainy.

I sprayed a light mist of gloss over the dried layer, sealed it, and it looked more even.

Thickness really matters. If the layer is too thick it pools; too thin it dries dull.

Maybe the problem is the particle size and the card color. I switched to a finer grade on pale stock and saw a bit smoother, but it's still not perfectly even.

Another tactic I tried was stamping with a pearlescent ink pad to add shimmer; it went on more evenly than painting, but the result was less subtle.

Honestly I’m not sure I’m getting any consistent result; it feels like luck or random lighting.
