What budget reconciliation tool or template helps flag the biggest variance?
#1
I’m trying to get a handle on our quarterly budget variance and my usual spreadsheet is just too clunky to track all the moving parts. Has anyone found a good template or tool that makes this kind of financial reconciliation clearer, maybe something that automatically flags the biggest discrepancies?

I ditched the mess and built a lean Excel file where actuals and budgets sit side by side by department and month. I added a quick top‑five movers box and conditional formatting so anything over 5% or above a certain dollar amount jumps out. It’s not perfect, but I can skim it in a minute and see the big movers.

We tried some ready-made layouts, but the data feed from our ERP was a mess; the flags were often meaningless because numbers weren’t reconciled. It felt like we fixed formatting but not the root data.

A few teammates moved to Google Sheets with a tiny Apps Script that pulls actuals weekly and colors cells that look off. It helped when folks were remote, but we spent weeks mapping fields and cleaning the source.

Do you think the bigger issue is the template or the data quality and process behind it?
