What can cause frame-time spikes and micro-stutters on a 3070?

I’ve been trying to get a stable 144 FPS in the new competitive shooter I’m playing, but my frame times keep spiking during intense team fights. I’m on a 3070 with a decent CPU, and I’ve already lowered most settings to competitive presets, but those sudden hitches are still throwing off my aim. I’m wondering if there’s something specific about the game’s engine or a background process causing these micro-stutters.

I poked at it for weeks. 144 on a 3070 with a decent CPU, but those hiccups show up in big team fights like clockwork. it feels like a render thread stutter rather than pure frame rate loss.

I disabled Windows Game Mode and the Game Bar, turned off the in game overlay from Nvidia Experience, and set a strict 144 cap with V Sync off (using G-Sync if available). The spikes came down a bit, but they never fully went away.

I keep wondering if it’s the engine’s scheduler or memory fragmentation during massive enemy/particle bursts. I’m not convinced it’s only GPU power anymore.

One day I swapped my mouse polling rate from 1000 Hz to 500 Hz and noticed the micro stutter soften a notch. Probably me chasing the wrong thing, but it helped a little.

Do you see the spikes even on a quiet moment or only when the lobby fills in and fights start?
