What can fix my front derailleur not snapping onto the big ring?

I’ve been trying to get my front derailleur to shift smoothly onto the big chainring, but it just won’t snap over cleanly without a lot of hesitation and sometimes dropping the chain. I’ve adjusted the high limit screw and cable tension so many times, following the manual, but I can’t seem to find that sweet spot where it shifts crisply every time.

Yeah I know that feeling. For me the problem wasn’t just the screws; the hanger was bent and it wrecked the alignment of the front derailleur. After I got it back true and re-torqued the mount, the shift to the big ring got noticeably crisper. I still had the occasional hesitation, but it was much better.

I also checked chain wear. I rode a lot with an old chain and it stretched; even with the derailleurs dialed in, the chain would ride higher on the outer plate and hesitate as it moved to the big ring. I measured with a simple ruler and replaced the chain; after that the shifting was more reliable, though not perfect.

One quick thing I did was inspect the cable housing. If it's kinked or the cable isn't sliding freely, you won't get a clean pull when shifting to the big ring. I swapped the housing and lubed the cable lightly; it helped a bit but didn't fix it completely.

Could the problem actually be the chainline rather than the derailleur—has anyone checked if the outer plate is rubbing as it climbs to the big ring?
