What can I do about wireless gaming mouse lag with a 2.4 GHz dongle?
#1
I’ve been using the same wired mouse for years and finally decided to try a wireless model for my gaming setup, but I’m noticing a tiny bit of lag in fast-paced shooters that wasn’t there before. I’m using the 2.4GHz dongle it came with, not Bluetooth, and my router is on the other side of the room. Has anyone else run into this, or did I just get a bad unit?

Yep, I ran into this a while back. it felt like micro stutters during fast aiming. I pulled the dongle closer with a short USB extension and kept it near the mouse, which helped a bit but didn’t fix it.

I swapped in a different mouse and still had a hint of lag, so I started suspecting the wireless channel rather than the hardware itself.

I moved the receiver to a different USB port on the PC and noticed the latency dip a notch, which makes me think port contention or a busy root hub could be part of it.

One time I turned off a smart speaker in the same room and the lag vanished for a session, which was annoying to admit but it happened.

I tried gaming from a different room with a separate router and the problem mostly went away, which makes me wonder about interference from the main router or other gear in the line of sight.

Feels like you can chase two or three potential fixes and still not be sure what’s the real cause.

Is it only in the frantic moments, or does it show up at random times?
