What can I do if my landlord enters with little notice?
#1
I’m trying to figure out if my landlord can legally enter my apartment with just a few hours' notice for what he calls a "routine inspection." The lease is vague, and state law seems to require reasonable notice, but I’m not sure what that means practically or if I can refuse entry for something that doesn’t feel urgent.

That few hours thing rings alarm bells. In my building, a routine inspection usually came with 24 hours notice. A last minute knock felt like they were trying to slip something past. I started keeping a calendar and asked for a written schedule next time.

I think most places use reasonable notice, which most folks read as 24 hours for non emergencies, but it depends on the lease and local rules. If you can cite a state or city rule, that helps you push back peacefully.

I did something concrete once: I replied by email saying I need at least 24 hours notice and asked for the window to be during normal hours. They pushed back at first but eventually offered to reschedule for the next business day.

Sometimes the issue feels less about the clock and more about privacy and control. I kept a simple log of what they inspected and when, which helped me see patterns and decide how to respond.

Do you want to push back now or just document and see what they do?
