What can i do to improve line quality when inking pencil sketches?

I’ve been trying to improve my line quality for inking my pencil sketches, but my lines always end up looking shaky or uneven when I go for confident, long strokes. I’m not sure if it’s my grip, the angle of my drawing board, or just a lack of practice in my arm movement.

I’ve been there. I’d grip the pen like it was a hammer and slam long strokes down and they’d still look jittery. Then I noticed my shoulder and forearm were tensed as if I might punch through the page. I started with a loose grip, let my shoulder do some of the heavy lifting, and warmed up with a few quick arcs before I inked. The first few tries looked worse, but after I slowed down and trusted the motion from the elbow to the wrist, the lines stopped bouncing as much. It wasn’t magic, just dialing back the tension and giving the arm some room to swing.

I did mess around with the board angle, yeah. Put the page on a slightly tilted surface and tried to ride the motion with longer strokes. It didn’t fix it on its own, but it did remind me to stop twisting my hand at the last moment. I still felt like I was fighting with the ink until I slowed the tempo and watched where each line started and ended.

One session I kept a simple log: every long stroke, I wrote down the start point, end point, and whether I pressed too hard or started to drift. I found the jagged moments clustered around sections where my eye left the target and my hand tried to correct mid-stroke. I stopped forcing big lines and instead did many small ones, then tried to connect them.

Sometimes I wonder if the real problem is the goal you’re chasing right away, not the grip. Do you think maybe you’re aiming for a perfect straight line too soon?
