What can we do about thin plastic film when recycling won't take it?

I’ve been trying to cut my household’s plastic use for years, but I just realized our local recycling program won’t take the thin plastic film from all our grocery packaging anymore. It feels like no matter how much we avoid single-use bags at the store, this other stuff just keeps piling up.

Yeah, that sounds familiar. Our local program won’t take that thin film either. We started small and kept at it: cloth produce bags, bulk purchases in jars, and setting aside the film for a drop-off when we happen to pass a bin. It did ease the pile a bit, but it doesn’t feel like a real solve.

One practical thing I tried was calling the waste department and a few stores to confirm what’s actually accepted. We rinse and dry the film and stash it for the store drop‑off when we see one. It buys a little time and cuts down a bit on that immediate backlog, but it doesn’t fix the bigger packaging problem and it’s never convenient to chase.

I keep wondering if the problem is bigger than just the film. Maybe we’re chasing a symptom rather than the root habit of buying things with packaging at all. It makes me doubt whether we’re fighting the right battle.

I keep circling back to the annoyance though. The last couple of months I drifted into talking about swapping to milk deliveries and refills, then the film shows up again and I’m right back where I started. It’s not clear to me what we should prioritize first.
