What can we do to improve discussions and cut drive-by posts on our forum?

I’ve been running a small forum for a few years, and lately I’ve noticed a real drop in the quality of discussion. It feels like we’re getting more drive-by comments and low-effort posts instead of the deeper conversations we used to have. I’m wondering if this is just a natural phase or if there’s something specific about our moderation or community culture that’s letting the signal-to-noise ratio slip.

Longtime mod here. After we went mobile-first and tweaked auto moderation, the volume of quick hits jumped and depth cratered. I pulled thread lengths and saw replies getting shorter, again and again. We added a weekly long form prompt and paused auto approve for new accounts to nudge a real intro, plus a pinned example of a good, thoughtful reply. It helped a bit, but I still spot threads that feel like a sprint to the last post rather than a discussion.

Yeah I tried to reward thoughtful posts with a quality reply badge, but it felt contrived and people started chasing badges instead of actual conversation. Then we had a week where we removed the ability to quote multiple sources, which backfired because folks needed context. I’m not sure what’s really off—the moderation or the community mood. It makes me wonder if folks just skim and drop a one liner because the feed is loud.

Sometimes I think the issue isn’t moderation at all but who’s showing up. We gained a bunch of new signups who want quick takes, and the core group quieted down. I attempted a 'thread a day' schedule to revive discussion but it stalled. We did a small audit and found revived old threads stayed dormant because people didn’t relate to the new norms.

I keep thinking starting a deep topic is a hurdle. We had a few moderators who fostered real debate, now it’s spread thin. I tried a glossary to cut jargon, but that slowed people down. And sometimes we drift off topic so easily—a thread about policy becomes a tangent about timelines. Do you think the problem is the moderation rules, or is it just that people have less time?
