What can we do to stop our forum moderation from becoming an echo chamber?
#1
I’ve been running a small hobby forum for a few years, and I’m starting to worry that our moderation team is becoming a bit of an echo chamber. They all seem to share the same opinions, and I’m noticing that dissenting voices get shut down a little too quickly, even when they’re being civil. I’m not sure if this is just the natural result of a tight-knit group or if it’s something I should actively try to change.

Yeah I get the worry. Our forum started feeling like a club where the same few people steer the convo. Dissenting voices were getting quiet fast, and we even logged threads for a couple of months to see if it was real or just vibes. It turned out the behavior was real enough to notice.

I joined the mod team and saw the pattern up close: we tended to go with the majority and softer points got nudged aside. Not because of rules, but habit and tone.

When we brought in rotating guest mods once a month, it did shake things up a bit. Some conversations cooled down, others stalled, and a few folks felt cut off too early anyway.

Maybe the real issue isn’t the mods at all but the community norms that make some topics hard to handle. Do you think that could be the thread we tug on first?
