What can we do when one player derails a word association game?

I just tried playing a word association game with my family, and it completely fell apart. My brother kept giving these ridiculous, off-the-wall answers that made no sense, and it just stalled the whole game. Has anyone else had this happen, where one person just doesn't seem to get the simple rules and it ruins the flow?

Yep, that happened to us last weekend. My brother kept tossing these wild off the wall answers and it stalled the whole round. We laughed at first, let a couple slide, then paused to reset the rhythm before trying again.

I kept wondering if he was just aiming for funny or if he truly wasn’t in the same brain space as the rest of us. We tried a light prompt to bring it back, but he doubled down and the momentum never came back.

Do you think the real issue is the energy in the room or the way the prompts are set up?

I once drifted into talking about a camping trip mid game and it felt pointless for a minute. We eventually pulled back, kept it casual, and tried to breathe a bit before looping back to the words.
