What caused the box office drop after opening weekend for that fantasy film?

I just saw the final domestic total for that big fantasy movie and it's barely going to cross $100 million. Given its massive budget and marketing, I thought it was a lock for a much bigger haul. What happened between the opening weekend and its final run that caused such a steep drop-off?

Yeah that felt off. The opening weekend was solid for a movie this kind of budget and hype, but the legs vanished fast. Marketing leaned hard into spectacle but not much in the way of a story hook that kept people coming back. Word of mouth was lukewarm, and the core audience probably snagged seats early and then moved on when the next big thing hit.

I saw it too and left thinking the timing was lousy. Tons of other premieres in the same window, plus people start checking streaming or home video quicker now. That crowd that actually buys a ticket may have split between several options.

From a numbers vibe: a steep drop after opening is a telltale sign. If the second weekend fell by a lot, studios cut ads and hoped for international legs, but domestic never got there. It could be a mismatch between what the ads sold and what the film actually delivered, or just that critics and audiences didn't align.

I wonder if the problem is the premise itself more than the execution. It looked big and glossy, but maybe people didn't care enough to spend another two hours in a theater. I kept thinking about that one scene we talked about in the car after the first showing, and it didn't stick.
