What causes a missing storage driver error during a Windows 11 clean install?
#1
I just tried to install a fresh copy of Windows 11 on my older desktop, but the setup keeps failing with an error about a missing driver for my storage drive. I’ve checked that the drive is connected properly in the BIOS, but I can’t get past this screen. Has anyone else hit this specific snag during a clean install?

Yep, I hit that exact issue on an older desktop. BIOS saw the drive but the Windows installer kept asking for something the controller would support. It felt like the installer just couldn’t talk to the controller.

I swapped the USB port for the install media and even re-burned the ISO, same error again.

For me the odd part was flipping the BIOS from RAID to AHCI. After that the installer got a foothold and could see something, but I still stalled later.

I checked the drive and cables, nothing obvious showed up, and while I was poking around I started thinking about case airflow and temp problems, which felt like a detour.

Could be the Windows image is missing the right driver for your storage controller. That sounded plausible to me, but I couldn’t confirm it in my case.

Is it possible the problem is the BIOS version rather than the drive?

If you want a quick sanity check, try a different drive and see if the error persists. I didn’t actually do that, but I’ve heard it helps some people.
