What causes deja vu with nausea and metallic taste and no seizures?
#1
I’ve been having these strange episodes where I feel a sudden, intense sense of familiarity with a place I know I’ve never been, followed by a wave of nausea and a metallic taste in my mouth. My doctor mentioned it could be related to temporal lobe activity and wants to do an EEG, but I’m not having any convulsions or losing awareness. Has anyone else experienced something like this without it developing into a full seizure?

I’ve had something like that too. One night, a sudden hit of familiarity with a place I’d never been, then a wave of nausea and a nasty metallic taste. No convulsions, no loss of awareness, just a jolt and then it faded. I started keeping a little log for a few weeks—time of day, how tired I was, what I’d eaten—and it seemed to cluster around long days and stress. My doctor did EEGs but nothing showed up during the tests. They said this kind of sensation can be a warning signal before a seizure, and not to ignore it.

I know others who describe similar episodes and were told they could be warning signs that don’t progress to a seizure either. Even if the EEG is normal, it doesn’t rule out the possibility. Some folks live with these for years, adjust sleep, caffeine, and stress, and the episodes narrow or disappear. It can be unsettling because it feels so specific and vivid, even when nothing else follows.

Drifting a bit here, but I’ve also wondered if migraines or anxiety could show up with that exact mix of déjà vu vibes and odd tastes. I had something that looked similar during a rough migraine cycle, which didn’t end up being a seizure either. It’s strange how the brain can borrow a memory flash and pair it with a physical cue like the taste. Either way, it’s confusing and you want someone who’s actually paying attention to it.

Some clinicians say isolated episodes like that without a real seizure are a known thing and deserve watching, and they’ll suggest a video EEG if it keeps happening. I’m not sure what to make of it either, but it helps to have someone listening. Have you noticed any patterns?
