What causes DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED during heavy firefights in DirectX games?

I keep getting a DirectX error that crashes my game right when a big firefight starts. It’s always the same “DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED” message, and my drivers are up to date, so I’m not sure what’s triggering it.

I had that same crash last week during a big firefight. The moment the screen filled with muzzle flash, the game froze and DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED popped up. My GPU was running hot—temps spiked into the red—and cooling the card a bit helped a little, but it still shows up when I push the scene.

I dumped a bunch of logging and did a clean driver reinstall, set the power plan to performance, and even tried a modest underclock to see if stability improves. Still same crash if the firefight gets loud.

To me it feels like a driver or hardware reset thing more than the game logic. It lines up with what people describe as the device being removed from the bus, sometimes after an overclock or a driver hiccup.

The memory angle might be real too; when textures stream in fast, VRAM use spikes and a swap or memory pressure could trip the device. I even noticed one night that the game would stutter and then crash after a long fight. Do you see your RAM or VRAM usage spike right as the fight starts?
