What causes the DirectX device removed error and how can i fix it?
#1
I keep getting a DirectX error that crashes me to desktop about an hour into any play session. The message says something about the device being removed, but my drivers are up to date and it happens on both DX11 and DX12. I’m not sure what else to try at this point.

I’ve run into that a few times. The device removed message usually means the GPU driver lost the device or the card briefly hiccuped. It can be heat, or a power drop, or something in the driver stack.

I fixed it once by reseating the card and redoing the power cables at the PSU, plus cleaning dust. After that it stayed stable for days. Could have just been a lazy connection.

Do you ever notice it only after a long session or after a particular patch, and do you see temps jump at the moment it crashes?

I tried a clean driver reinstall, disabled overlays, and set a hard FPS cap. It helped a bit but the crashes kept coming at random times, which made me suspect the problem was something else like the PSU or a flaky PCIe connection rather than the game.
