What cough medicine is safe for a 6-year-old and helps with nighttime coughing?

I’ve been trying to understand the different types of cough medicine on the shelf for my kid’s persistent nighttime cough, but I’m honestly confused about what’s actually safe and appropriate for a six-year-old. I see expectorants, suppressants, and some labeled for both, and I’m not sure which one addresses the kind of cough that keeps him awake.

I looked at the labels and most nighttime syrups say not for kids under six, so we skipped those and asked the pharmacist what was safe for a six year old.

We tried guaifenesin based product (an expectorant) for a couple nights to loosen mucus, but I honestly didn’t notice a real difference.

Honestly I’m wondering if the problem is the cough or dry air or congestion; is the medicine even addressing the root cause?

We ended up using a humidifier, saline spray, and a slight head elevate; sleep improved after a few nights, which made me feel better even if I was wary of meds.
