What could be causing déjà vu with nausea and a metallic taste?
#1
I’ve been getting these strange episodes where I feel a sudden, intense sense of overwhelming familiarity with my surroundings, like I’ve lived the exact moment before, but it’s accompanied by a wave of nausea and a metallic taste. My doctor mentioned it could be a type of focal aware seizure originating in the temporal lobe. Has anyone else experienced this specific combination of déjà vu with physical symptoms?

I had a similar thing a while back—a sudden sense of deja vu with a wash of nausea and a metallic taste. It would flash in and out in moments, and I’d feel like I’d actually lived that exact second. I finally talked to a neurologist and we did an EEG. The taste stuck in my memory more than the episode did. It helped to start keeping a log of when it happened, what I’d eaten, sleep, stress, anything that stood out.

For me it showed up after busy days or when I was sleep deprived. The doctor talked about a possible focal onset event in the temporal lobe, and several tests were suggested. The MRI was normal, the EEG inconclusive, and I still don’t know if it’s seizures, migraines, or something else. The uncertainty is the hard part.

I tried not to read too much into it and kept a few routines steady—regular sleep, regular meals, less caffeine. The episodes persisted, but not as often. I began noting triggers and how long the feeling lasted. It wasn’t a cure, just a way to feel a little less helpless.

Maybe the real issue is anxiety or something you ate changing the taste, or maybe it’s really about brain activity; would a 24 hour EEG help?
