What could be causing my knee pain: meniscus tear or arthritis?
#1
I’ve been dealing with persistent knee pain for months, and my doctor mentioned the possibility of a meniscus tear. I’m trying to understand if the aching and catching sensation I feel when I twist could really be from that, or if it might be something else like arthritis.

I’ve had knee stuff like that. When I twisted and heard a pop and felt it catch, a doctor mentioned a meniscus tear as a possibility. Those symptoms—catching, pain with twisting, some swelling—often push in that direction, but they can overlap with arthritis too. They usually check with a hands‑on exam and may order an MRI to see the cartilage. I ended up doing PT first and avoiding risky twisting moves, and the folks at the clinic said to keep an eye on swelling.

Arthritis is a different animal. The persistent ache, stiffness in the morning, and pain that lingers after activity can point there. In my experience, the vibe is more constant and not just tied to twisting. Imaging helped separate cartilage wear from a tear, but even that isn’t always decisive. The big thing is to track when it hurts, what you were doing, and if there’s clicking or locking.

Did your doctor mention needing imaging or a physical exam to tell the difference, or are you just guessing from the feel? It’s easy to read symptoms and worry but the real signal often comes from a clinician checking the joint and maybe an MRI.

A year ago I tried lowering activity, icing after twists, and a knee brace during hikes. It helped a bit, though the problem kept showing up after stairs. I can’t say it fixed it, but it changed the pattern enough that I slept through more nights.
