What could cause a cold-start chirp in my Honda Accord belt or tensioner?

I’ve got a 2015 Honda Accord that’s started making a faint chirping or squealing noise from the engine bay, but only when it’s cold outside and for the first few minutes after startup. Once the engine warms up a bit, it goes away completely. I’m trying to figure out if this is just a worn serpentine belt needing replacement or if it could point to a failing tensioner or pulley.

That cough sounds like the serpentine belt acting up when things are cold. In my Accord I heard a faint chirp at startup on chilly mornings, and it quieted once the engine warmed a few minutes. I checked for glaze or cracks on the belt and watched the pulleys to see if one was rubbing. If the belt looks frayed or glazed, or if the pulley has some wobble when the engine is off, that’s a sign to look closer.

I did replace the belt and the tensioner on a different car after a similar noise. The belt showed cracks and the tensioner was a little stiff when cold, and after swapping both the chirp went away for a long stretch.

Sometimes it turns out to be the alternator pulley or the power steering pump. In my case the alternator pulley barely made noise when cold, but once warmed up it stopped. It’s easy to misattribute to the belt even if it’s a separate pulley.

Could it be moisture and not a failing part at all?
