What could cause a high-pitched front-end whine at speed wheel bearing or tires?

I’ve got a 2015 sedan that’s developed a faint, high-pitched whine from the front end that seems to come and go with wheel speed. I’m trying to figure out if this is just a wheel bearing starting to go, or if it could be something else like a worn brake pad indicator or even a tire issue. The sound is most noticeable around 40 mph and doesn’t change when I turn.

That sounds like the wheel bearing is starting to go. A faint high pitched whine that shows up with speed and doesn’t change when you turn fits that pattern, though it can be other things too. It’s worth checking tires and brakes on the list since a warped rotor or a worn tire can also hum at that speed.

I've chased a similar noise and it turned out to be a tire issue. A worn tire with irregular wear made a high pitched hum around 40 mph and it didn’t care which direction I steered. Replacing the tires helped for a while, but it wasn’t a guaranteed fix in every case.

I did wonder about a brake pad wear indicator, but those sounds usually show up when you brake. If you’re not hearing it under braking, it might be something else sneaking in when you’re rolling.

Could it be something else entirely like a loose wheel cover or a belt? It’s the kind of subtle thing you notice on quiet roads. Do you hear any change when you brake?
