What could cause a high-pitched whine when turning the steering wheel?

My 2016 sedan just started making a high-pitched whine that seems to come from the front end whenever I turn the steering wheel, especially at low speeds or when parked. It’s not the power steering fluid level, as I checked that and it’s fine, but the noise is getting more consistent.

That sounds like something in the belt or pulley area. Even with full fluid, a failing belt tensioner or pulley can whine when you load the steering. Check the serpentine belt for cracks or glazing and feel the pulleys by hand with the engine off for rough spots.

I had a similar whine once and it was the pump or pulley; replacing the belt and tensioner fixed it for me.

Could be a wheel bearing or CV joint; those can howl under load when turning.

A loose steering rack bolt or worn rack bushings can also make noises as the steering shaft flexes; not common but possible.

If possible, have someone drive it while you listen near the belt area with the hood up.

I’d avoid assuming it’s nothing until it’s inspected; at low speeds the noise can escalate quickly as components wear.

When you say high pitched, does the pitch change with engine RPM or wheel speed, and is it louder when turning left or right?
