What could cause a high-pitched whine when turning the steering wheel in Civic?

I’ve got a 2015 Civic that’s started making a faint, high-pitched whining noise when I turn the steering wheel at low speeds, especially in a parking lot. It doesn’t seem to affect the power steering assist, but that sound has me worried something in the steering system is wearing out.

That faint high pitched sound when you’re turning slow in a Civic usually points at the electric assist system or the steering column. Since the 2015 model uses EPS there’s no steering fluid to check, so folks blame the EPS motor or the steering rack bearings. It didn’t kill the assist for me, but it did make me nervous enough to want a look sooner than later.

I did a little field check last weekend. I turned the wheel with the engine running and then with it off, listened where the sound seemed to come from, and paid attention to whether it was tied to straight-line driving or full lock. The noise showed up mainly when the wheel was turned at parking-lot speeds, and it felt a bit rough in the steering mechanism rather than just road noise.

Could it be the steering rack mounting bushing?

Maybe it’s not the steering at all. Could be tire noise or a wheel bearing that only shows up when you’re crawling in a lot. I swapped tires on a different car once and the whine almost disappeared, so I’d at least check tires and wheel bearings before you rush to replace the EPS stuff.
