What could cause morning jaw stiffness and clicking when I open my mouth wide?
#1
For the last few mornings, I’ve woken up with a really stiff and painful jaw on one side, and I can hear a faint clicking sound when I open my mouth wide to yawn. It’s making it hard to eat my usual breakfast. I’m not sure if this is something that will just go away on its own or if I should be concerned about it.

That sounds rough. I woke up with a stiff jaw like that once. It can be from a tense jaw muscle or grinding teeth in sleep. It might ease after a few days with soft foods and a little rest.

I tried a warm compress and kept to soft foods for a few days. I avoided hard chewy stuff and tried to rest my jaw a bit more. I still heard a click when I opened wide and it worried me a bit.

If it lasts more than a week or if the jaw locks or you cannot open your mouth as usual you should see a dentist or doctor. It could be TMJ or a dental issue that needs a look.

Could this be a sign of something more serious or just jaw strain?
