What could cause rough elbow skin: dry skin or psoriasis?
#1
I’ve been dealing with these persistent, rough patches on my elbows for months now, and my regular moisturizer just isn’t making a dent. It doesn’t exactly itch, but the skin looks thick and almost scaly. I’m wondering if this is just very dry skin or something like psoriasis starting in that area.

I had something like that last year. Elbow patches were rough and thick and my usual moisturizer did nothing. I ended up using a thicker petrolatum based ointment and dabbed it on at night; it slowly softened over a few weeks.

Psoriasis can start with a patch like that, but it’s also easy to mistake it for dry skin. If you see red edges or silvery scales or it spreads, that might be more telling. Have you noticed any red patches or itching besides the rough skin?

For now I’d keep it simple: after a shower, pat dry and apply a thick fragrance-free ointment, maybe seal it with a bandage overnight. Avoid hot water and harsh soaps.

I’ve chased this kind of patch with a bunch of creams and still felt unsure. It helped me to look at the environment—humidity, fabric rubbing, and shower temp—and not just the cream. If it sticks around, a dermatologist visit feels like the right move, even if you’re not sure.
