What counts as a normal grocery budget with a toddler?

I’m trying to figure out if my family’s budget is just unusually tight or if this is what everyone is dealing with now. Our weekly grocery haul for two adults and a toddler, buying almost all store brands, just crossed a new threshold and it doesn’t feel like we’re buying anything special.

I feel this too. Our weekly haul for two adults and a toddler used to hover around 180, tops. Lately it crossed into the 230s even though we’re buying mostly store brands and sticking to simple meals. It didn’t feel like a one off either, more like a steady drift over a couple of months.

On a whim I started keeping receipts and jotting prices per unit for a month. Even with no extra snacks or fancy stuff, staples like milk and cereal went up, and eggs jumped more than 15 percent. The total still looks the same week to week, but the math changed. It’s a little demoralizing to see the numbers stack up this way.

Maybe it’s not the budget getting tight so much as other costs creeping in. Gas, daycare, small fees. When I add up all the little increases, groceries feel like a rounding error until you hit a threshold.

Do you track weekly spend and compare to six months ago?
