What counts as cultural exchange vs appropriation with a gifted garment?
#1
I’ve been trying to understand where the line is between a respectful cultural exchange and appropriation. I wore a garment that was a gift from a friend’s family during a celebration in their community, but now I’m worried it might have been seen as me taking something that isn’t mine to claim.

One time a friend handed me a garment with a long story attached at a ceremony, and it felt like a real invitation rather than a prop. I wore it because they told me it was okay and explained the symbolism, and I tried to keep things simple that day, not posing for photos or claiming anything beyond listening.

I keep thinking maybe the line isn’t about the fabric but about appropriation—who gets to carry the story and when. I’m not sure I’m the right person to tell it, even if I wore it with a blessing. It’s messy in my head.

I wore it, then woke up worried someone would see it as mine and take the ownership away. It felt like a small, private moment spinning into a public worry.

Also I remember buying a market scarf abroad that had a similar motif, and the vendor laughed it off, but later I wondered if it was wrong to keep wearing it after the trip. The garment stays in the closet and the gift story keeps circling back every time I pull it out.
