What crosses the line between respectful cultural exchange and appropriation?

I’m trying to figure out where the line is between a respectful cultural exchange and just taking something that isn’t yours to take. I wore a hairstyle from a culture I admire to a friend’s wedding, and someone later told me it was appropriation, not appreciation. I genuinely didn’t mean any harm, but now I’m wondering if my good intentions are even the point.

I did something similar at a wedding once. I wore a hairstyle from a culture I admire, and later someone told me it was appropriation. I truly didn’t mean harm.

I talked to a few friends who share that culture, and the answers were messy but useful. Some said it can feel respectful if you listen first, others said context matters more than intent.

The more I learn, the fuzzier the line seems. I keep thinking about permission, power, and who makes the rules in these moments.

Is the line between appreciation and taking real, or is it something we tell ourselves to feel better?
