What deductions can I claim for my 1099 side gig income and home office?

I’m trying to figure out how to handle my side gig income this year, specifically the 1099 forms I’ve started receiving. I’ve always been a W-2 employee, so I’m not sure what deductions I can legitimately take for my home office and mileage without raising any flags.

Yeah I did the side gig thing last year. I went with the simplified home office deduction because I rent and the workspace is just a corner. It’s a flat rate per square foot up to 300 square feet, so I didn’t chase a ton of receipts. I did keep receipts for internet and the extra utilities, just in case the line of questioning comes up. For mileage I log only business trips and use the standard mileage rate.

Sounds like you’re worried about flags. In my experience the biggest gate is exclusivity and regular use. If you’re using a part of your home that isn’t clearly dedicated to the business, you may need to use actual expenses and prove space, utilities, and maybe depreciation. It’s a lot of record keeping and the rules can bite when you mix W-2 with 1099 income. Best to talk to a tax pro or at least use Schedule C correctly and keep your receipts organized.

Sometimes I overthink it. I kept a tiny notebook for miles for about three months and then switched to a spreadsheet. I found that I was rounding miles, which stressed me out, but the math wasn’t too bad once I had a log. Do you run the gig as sole proprietorship or LLC?

I thought about moving to a coworking space to dodge the home office part, but the extra cost didn’t always pay off. So I kept a separate business bank account, tracked income and expenses, and tried to keep things labeled clearly in the books. It’s not perfect, but it felt easier than arguing with myself about deductions.
