What did the finale reveal about the protagonist's motivation and foreshadowing?

I just watched the new season finale and I’m genuinely confused about the protagonist’s final choice to walk away. It felt like it completely contradicted their established motivation from the entire second act. Did anyone else find that character decision jarring, or did I miss some subtle foreshadowing earlier on?

I felt the same, like the walk away undermined what they spent act two building. The motive seemed rooted in protecting someone or staying put, so the final choice read as a flip. I kept thinking there was some subtle foreshadowing—the way a line lands later after a quiet scene, or a tiny decision they didn’t follow through on—but maybe I imagined it.

I watched it a second time hoping I missed a cue: the visuals, the beat of the music, even a tiny object in the frame. It felt like there was meaning, but it still didn’t click.

Do you think the writers were really pointing to a hidden motive we never saw, or was it just sloppy writing?

It felt rushed, like they skipped a beat that should've mattered.
