What difference does Quest 3's passthrough make for Quest 2 in dark rooms?

I just got a Quest 3 and I’m trying to figure out if the visual upgrade is worth it for someone who already has a Quest 2. The mixed reality passthrough is clearer, but in darker rooms it still gets pretty grainy and hard to read text. I’m wondering if that’s just my setup or if others see the same thing.

I did the upgrade to the Quest 3 last month. In a bright living room the passthrough is noticeably crisper and the text in menus reads more cleanly than on Quest 2. In a darker corner it still gets grainy pretty quickly and the font loses sharpness, so it isn’t magical in low light.

I kept both headsets side by side for a weekend, same room and same lighting. In practice I wasn’t blown away by the difference, especially for casual use; the improvement felt real only when the room wasn’t dim and when I’m reading longer text. In dim lighting the grain still looks familiar.

I tried a few quick tweaks: bumped room lighting, ran a passthrough calibration, and even reset the device once. The changes were small and not consistent; some days the letters looked a touch crisper, other times it reverted to the same grain in the corners.

Maybe the real problem isn’t the hardware at all, but what you’re trying to read in passthrough or how fonts are rendered in those apps. Could it be the font size or the app’s UI is just not designed for close-up reading in MR?
