What difference would a 35mm lens make if I already shoot with 50mm?

I’ve been shooting with a 50mm prime for a few years and love it, but lately I keep finding myself physically backed into a corner at events trying to get a wider shot. I’m considering adding a 35mm lens to my bag for this, but I’m worried the focal length might be too similar to make a real difference in how I shoot.

I tried a 35mm and it helped in crowded rooms. I could frame a group without backing into the wall every time. I found I could stay closer and still keep the energy in the shot.

I borrowed a wider lens for one event and it felt similar to my 50. It may be the space I shoot in more than the focal length. Sometimes I still cropped later.

Maybe the real issue is not the lens but the angle I stand at. I tended to shoot from a wall corner and the wider view saved me. Then I wandered to a doorway and it felt the same.

I did a quick indoor test with two lenses and the wider option did offer more room. I did not love changing my whole approach but it was nice to have option in tight spots.
