What do night leg pains in a 4-year-old mean: growing pains or something else?

My 4-year-old has started waking up two or three times a night complaining that his legs hurt, specifically in his calves. It’s happening often enough that we’re losing sleep, but he seems completely fine during the day. I’ve heard this could just be growing pains, but I’m wondering if there’s anything specific I should be looking for or if this is a normal part of development.

That sounds exhausting. In our house the calf complaints would come on and then he’d settle after a gentle massage and a bit of stretching before bed. We did a warm bath, a light snack, and a bit of quiet time, and the middle of the night pain gradually faded after a couple of weeks. It was hard to tell if it helped, but we felt like we tried something.

From what I’ve heard, growing pains often show up at night and aren’t usually accompanied by swelling or daytime limping. If you start seeing red flags like fever, swelling, redness, a limp during the day, or the pain lasting longer than a few minutes, that’s when I’d check in with the pediatrician. Keeping a simple diary of when it happens and what he did that day can help the doctor sort it out.

Part of me wonders if this is really the growth pains thing or something else, like he tenses up before sleep or just one-off. It’s easy to overthink when it’s your kid waking up repeatedly, and I don’t want to dismiss it either. I guess I just watch for patterns and hope it settles.

Have you noticed a trigger, like after a day with lots of running or after a nap? Sometimes it helps me to hear what others did to cope.
