What do you think about the best picture voting system and preferential ballots?

I’ve been trying to figure out if the voting for the Best Picture Oscar is actually a good system. It seems like the preferential ballot can sometimes reward a movie that everyone just tolerates, rather than one that people are truly passionate about.

I watched a year where the film I cared about ended up losing after most voters listed it as second or third. It felt like the winner was the one that people could pretend to like more than love, not the one that sparked real passion.
