What does a cancelled auto policy due to lapse mean for getting a new one?

I just got a notice that my car insurance is being cancelled because of a lapse in my prior coverage. I thought the gap was only a couple of weeks between jobs, but the insurer says it was longer. I’m not sure how to prove the correct dates or what this means for finding a new policy now.

That stinks. I had a lapse once and the key was getting the exact dates in writing. Ask for the cancellation notice and a copy of the policy declarations page that shows the coverage period. Then line those up with your payment records or bank statements to pin down when the lapse started and ended. With that in hand it’s easier to explain to a new insurer.

I’d pull the dates from the insurer’s portal or the mailed documents; it’s easy to misremember a week or two, but if they say longer you want their exact date and policy number. Do you have those handy?

When you shop again, expect some quotes to be higher or they’ll want to see proof of continuous coverage since the lapse. Some places will quote anyway if you’re willing to take a higher deductible or pay more upfront.

I once started keeping a simple calendar of policy dates and renewals. It helped me avoid assuming anything about the dates. Anyway, gather the documents above and then you can call a few brokers to compare.
