What does a ferritin level of 8 ng/mL mean for iron stores and fatigue?

I just got my blood work back and my doctor said my ferritin level is at 8 ng/mL. I’m trying to understand what that really means for my iron stores, since the fatigue I’ve been feeling is pretty intense.

When my ferritin was that low I was living on naps and still felt wiped out. It matched what my doctor said about low iron stores, and after I started the iron supplement the energy slowly came back over a few weeks.

I'm not a clinician, but fatigue like that can creep in before anemia shows up on a CBC. The number might be an early signal and worth tracking with follow-up labs.

Do you have heavy periods or gut issues that could be causing iron loss?

I tried focusing on sleep and hydration and even tried short daily walks, but it felt like chasing a moving target until the labs lined up with a plan. It was unclear how long to wait or what felt better, so I kept checking in with my doctor.
