What does a ferritin of 12 mean for my iron stores and fatigue?
#1
I just got my blood work back and my doctor said my ferritin level is 12 µg/L. I’m trying to understand what that really means for my iron stores, since the lab’s reference range starts at 15. I feel tired a lot, but I don’t know if that’s just life or if this result explains it.

That 12 number is low. Ferritin reflects your iron stores, so it suggests your stores might be depleted. The lab says the range starts at 15, so you’re below that cut. Fatigue can come with that, but plenty of people feel tired for lots of other reasons too.

I tried bumping iron in small daily doses by adding red meat, beans, and leafy greens, and I did a doctor approved supplement for a few weeks. I didn’t notice a big lift in energy and then I started wondering if there was something else going on.

Part of me wants to blame sleep and stress, because maybe the body just runs on caffeine some days. It’s easy to tell yourself it must be iron, but it could be other things that drain energy too.

I asked my clinician for a full iron panel to see other pieces like transferrin saturation, and they said they’d recheck in a couple of weeks to see if anything moves.
