What does a persistent dry cough mean for cough-variant asthma?
#1
I’ve been managing my asthma for years, but lately I’ve noticed a persistent, dry cough that just won’t go away even when my other symptoms are controlled. My inhaler helps a bit, but it doesn’t fully stop this specific cough, and my doctor mentioned it might be a form of cough-variant asthma. Has anyone else experienced this kind of isolated, stubborn cough as their main asthma symptom?

Yep, Ive been there. My main issue became a stubborn dry cough that hung around even when my inhaler helped with the usual wheeze. It felt like a separate thread of symptoms, and it wouldnt quit no matter how well my other numbers looked.

Ive had a doctor mention cough-variant asthma as a possibility when the cough was the only persistent symptom. I tried boosting inhaled steroids and using a spacer, but the cough barely shifted. Has anyone else tried looking at reflux, postnasal drip, or throat irritation as a trigger?

A few concrete steps I actually did: bought a humidifier, kept water by the bed, and started logging cough days. It helped for a couple of weeks and then the cough came back even when breathing felt steady.

Last spring I found myself wondering if I was chasing the right problem. The cough kept going after the rest of the asthma stuff cooled down, and I started to think maybe allergies or an irritant exposure was the real driver. It was frustrating because the pattern didnt fit what I expected.
