What does a persistent shoulder ache mean for a rotator cuff issue?
#1
I’ve been dealing with a nagging ache in my shoulder for months, and my doctor mentioned it might be related to a rotator cuff issue. I’m just not sure what to make of that, or if the occasional sharp pain when I reach overhead means it’s getting worse.

Yeah I’ve been there. I had a nagging shoulder ache for months and a doctor mentioned it might be a rotator cuff issue. The occasional sharp pain when I reach overhead made me worry. I tried laying off heavy overhead stuff, doing gentle range of motion, and icing after activity, plus sleeping with a pillow under the arm. It helped a little, but most days it stayed stubborn and I couldn’t tell if it was getting worse.

Mine flared up after a gym session, and I tried a few things with mixed results. I bought a small resistance band set and did some light external rotation and forward elevation a few times a week. It felt better for a week, then the pain came back. I stopped after a few weeks because I didn’t feel I was getting lasting progress.

Is it possible the real issue isn’t the shoulder at all? I started thinking about neck posture and nerve irritation, especially when the pain is overhead. It drifted me away from a single diagnosis, which was oddly calming but didn’t fix the pain.

I’m not a professional, but if it’s been months with those overhead sharp pains, maybe asking the clinician about imaging or a PT evaluation could help you see what’s really going on. It’s frustrating to wait, and I don’t want to pretend I know what’s best for you.
