What does ASC-US mean and should I expect an HPV follow-up?

I’ve been told my Pap smear results came back as ASC-US, and my doctor suggested an HPV test as the next step. I’m trying to understand what this really means for me and if anyone else has gone through this specific follow-up.

I had ASC-US a while back and the HPV test came back negative. They told me to repeat the Pap in a year. The waiting was the worst part, not knowing if I needed a procedure. I just tried to take it one week at a time and stay busy with daily stuff.
